Daymond John

Issue #7

Hello Tiny Maverick 👋

Today, I'm going to share a story about how Daymond John went from making hats with a sewing machine to becoming the "godfather of urban fashion".

Meet Daymond John, a very smart tiny maverick who has made a gigantic impact on the world of fashion.

Daymond grew up in New York City with his mum.

She worked very hard as a flight attendant and sometimes had more than one job.

When Daymond was little, he wanted to make hats.

So, he asked his mum to teach him how to use a sewing machine, and he made the hats all by himself.

In order to make money, Daymond sold the hats in his local area in the evenings, after he had finished making them in the morning.

One day, he and his friend sold $800 worth of hats, and they realised they had a great idea…

They created a special logo and sewed it onto hockey jerseys, sweatshirts, and t-shirts.

They called the brand FUBU, which stands for "For Us, By Us".

Not long after, Daymond asked his famous friend L.L. Cool J to wear one of the t-shirts in a picture to help promote the brand.

FUBU soon became recognised across the world.

As a result, Daymond was given the nickname, "Godfather of Urban Fashion."

He's so good at business that he's now on a TV show called Shark Tank, where he helps people with new ideas for products and businesses.

Daymond is also very kind and likes to help other people.

He started his own charity to help young people achieve their dreams and wrote a book to give business advice.

Even though Daymond had some difficulties growing up, like having a hard time reading and writing, he never gave up.

He found ways to work around his challenges and became very successful.

Design Your Own Hat

Daymond John wanted a particular style of hat when he was growing up. But they were too expensive for him to buy. So he decided to make his own. This small decision led to him creating a worldwide company!

This week's activity is to design your own hat. If you were in charge of creating a hat that people would instantly want to buy, what would it look like? What colours would you use? And how will your logo and brand name stand out from the rest?
